Skincare junkies and celebrities alike are obsessing over the newest skincare trend on the block – Hyaluronic Acid. This magical product has slowly become a must-have ingredient in every skin care product and is said to be the solution to all your skincare woes! That’s a pretty big claim, so we decided to do some research and here’s what we found.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like-water-holding molecule that retains water and hydrates the skin, making it plump. It’s a natural substance found in the skin to keep it refreshed, stable and encourage cell renewal.

What Are The Benefits?

Since our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid, you may wonder why we need something that our body already generates. Well, the answer is simple. One third of that naturally-generated hyaluronic acid we produce gets degraded and synthesized on a daily basis. We also produce less hyaluronic acid as we age so applying it externally is a great way to keep the skin hydrated. But there are many other benefits to this product as well.

1. Great Agent For Anti-Ageing

As our skin ages, it becomes dehydrated as its ability to retain water decreases. This results in a loss of firmness and collagen – which makes the skin look youthful – and fine lines appear on your skin. When applied, hyaluronic acid rehydrates the skin and makes it plumper, while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Good For Joint Pain

Hyaluronic acid is used for various joint disorders, including osteoarthritis. You can either take it orally or have it injected into the affected joint by a doctor. People report a moderate improvement in joint stiffness and pain decreasing due to this treatment.

3. Good For Moisturizing

Due to its hydrating properties, hyaluronic acid is essential for all skin types! It’s  it’s super hydrating and is known to make the skin smoother and softer. Look for serum or moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid, commonly listed as “Sodium Hyaluronate.”

4. It’s Good For All Skin Types

Hyaluronic acid works wonders for all skin types, not just dry skin. It’s good for sensitive and blemish-prone skin, as it helps keep the skin calm while protecting it with its antioxidant properties.  Its antioxidant properties makes it act as a shield against pollution and other aggressors, thus making it an essential must have for all skin types. If you have oily skin, look for water-based gels that contain hyaluronic acid.

5. It’s Used In Fillers

Plastic surgeons often inject hyaluronic acid into sunken areas of the skin to plump it up, but you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg for the injections. Just incorporate it into your skin care routine and reap the benifets of plumper and softer skin!

Drawbacks?

Since hyaluronic acid is already found naturally in our body, there are no proven side effects to using it externally. However, just like with any skin care product, start slow with hyaluronic acid and apply it once per day initially to see your skin reaction to it. You should also patch test the skin product on your arm to see if you have any reactions to it.
